CMS Proposes Another 6% Medicare Cut for Ophthalmology

On August 3rd, 2020, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed another reimbursement cut for certain specialties. Amongst them, ophthalmology is slated for a 6% reduction. This is in addition to the proposed 15% cut that was implemented early 2020 for the specialty.

As if ophthalmologists didn’t already have enough hurdles in 2020 (adhering to pandemic related guidelines for offices, continuing to provide quality care, and keeping offices open and staffed), having more revenue taken away is another obstacle.

If you are an ophthalmologist…

Have you considered Satellite Surgery?

Surgical Direct provides a way for your practice to increase in satellite surgical locations with the least amount of friction possible. Our Mobile Cataract Service allows you to have a familiar operating experience, no matter where you are operating. Use the same equipment, supplies, and trusted technicians that pay extra attention to the details of your day. We handle case supplies, lenses, and equipment needs.

Expanding satellite surgery locations allows your practice to extend its reach into markets that your office can’t physically service, creating opportunities for new revenue streams without the expense of opening a new office.

So how does Surgical Direct help make this seamless?

1) OD Referral Network

Tap into our OD referral network and start building relationships with referring ODs in your satellite areas. Many of our surgeons come to us, asking for opportunities to satellite. We take care of all the legwork and get our surgeons connected with referral sources. Often, this is the biggest hurdle. SDI has you covered.

2) Hospital / ASC Prep + Setup

Similar to our referral program, we also have a vast network of surgical facility connections. If you have an interest in satellite locations, we’ll begin reaching out to OR administrators in the area, taking care of all the admin details needed to get surgery started.

3) Full OR Outfitting for Cataracts (1 or 2 rooms)

Once we have the referral sources and the facility is ready to get started, we outfit the OR with your desired equipment selections. This includes the latest phaco systems, ophthalmic microscopes, ample phaco handpiece trays, and instrument trays.

4) Case Supply Management

Along with equipment, we bring surgeon-selected and customized supply lists for each case (minus drugs). If you operate with us elsewhere, we’ll bring the exact same supplies, extending familiarity to a new environment.

5) Lens Supply Management

There are so many details in getting started in a new surgical location, and lenses is one of the biggest details that needs to handled with precision per case. In our lens management program, we work directly with your office for lens picks for the day. Every surgery visit, we’ll bring all your lens picks (primary, secondary, premium, AC) with backups. Need a last minute diopter change? We also bring full consignments of your primary lens pick to cover those last minute calculation changes.

6) Access to YAG & SLT Lasers

We provide the ability to add-on YAG & SLT lasers to your surgery day. This helps many of our surgeons so they can take care of everyone’s needs in just one trip.

These 6 benefits of satellite services with Surgical Direct just scratch the surface. The first step is to get in touch with us and begin the conversation of satellite surgery and we will take it from there.
