CMS Proposes Another 6% Medicare Cut for Ophthalmology

On August 3rd, 2020, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed another reimbursement cut for certain specialties…Ophthalmology was among the specialties listed with a proposed 6% cut. This is in addition to the proposed 15% cut that was implemented early 2020 for the specialty.

As if Ophthalmologists didn’t already have enough hurdles in 2020 (adhering to pandemic related guidelines for offices, continuing to provide quality care, and keeping offices open and staffed), having more revenue taken away is hard to take.

If you are an ophthalmologist…

Have you considered Satellite Surgery?

Surgical Direct provides a way for your practice to increase in satellite surgical locations with the least amount of friction possible. Our Mobile Cataract Service allows you to have a familiar operating experience, no matter where you are operating, with the same equipment, supplies, and trusted technicians that pay extra attention to the details of your day; case supplies, lenses, and equipment needs.

Expanding satellite surgery locations allows your practice to expand its reach into markets that your office can’t physically service, creating opportunities for new revenue streams without the expense of opening a new office.

So how does Surgical Direct help make this seamless?

1) OD Referral Network

Tap into our OD referral network and start building relationships with referring ODs in your satellite areas. Many of our surgeons come to us, asking for opportunities to satellite. We take care of all the legwork and get our surgeons connected with referral sources. Often, this is the biggest hurdle. SDI has you covered.

2) Hospital / ASC Prep + Setup

Similar to our referral program, we also have a vast network of surgical facility connections. If you have an interest in satellite locations, we’ll begin reaching out to OR administrators in the area, taking care of all the admin details needed to get surgery started.

3) Full OR Out-fitting for Cataracts (1 or 2 rooms)

Once we have the referral sources and the OR is ready to get started, we outfit the OR with your desired equipment selections. This includes the latest reliable phaco systems, ophthalmic microscopes, ample phaco handpiece trays, and Instrument trays needed for the day.

4) Case Supply Management

Along with equipment, we bring surgeon-selected customized supply lists for all your case supplies (minus drugs). If you operate with us elsewhere, we’ll bring the exact same supplies, bringing familiarity to a new environment.

5) Lens Supply Management

There are so many details in getting started in a new surgical location, and lenses is one of the biggest details in a case that needs to handled with precision. In our lens management program, we work directly with your office for lens picks for the day. Every surgery visit, we’ll bring all your lens picks (primary, secondary, premium, AC) with backups. Need a last minute diopter change? We also bring full consignments of your primary lens pick to cover those last minute calculation changes.

6) Access to Yag & SLT Lasers

We provide the ability to add-on YAG & SLT lasers to your surgery day. This helps many of our surgeons out so they can just make one trip and take care of everyone’s needs.

These 6 benefits of satellite services with Surgical Direct just scratch the surface. The first step is to get in touch with us and begin the conversation of your interest in satellite surgery and we will take it from there.

Cataract Reimbursements Change In 2020

Medicare has proposed more cuts for Cataract reimbursements for surgeons in 2020, maybe as much as 15% for non-complicated procedures. If you haven’t heard of this yet, read through Review of Ophthalmology’s article titled “Medicare Proposes Another Cut In Cataract Reimbursement”.

Reduced cataract reimbursements, once again, creates a unique situation for surgeons and their practices, having to (a) settle for a reduction in revenue, or (b) figure out a solution to raise their case volume and productivity to make up the difference. We’ve done a little math on our end, and it looks like surgeons will have to add an average of 3-4 cases per surgery day to bring in the same revenue.

Surgical Direct can help make you make up the difference!

Surgical Direct is your cataract outsourcing solution, delivering a service of excellence with care. Our Mobile Cataract Services boost your efficiency standards to new levels.

Here are 3 practical ways that we can help increase your revenue.

1) Satellite Locations

Have you thought about adding a satellite location? More surgery days is probably one of the best ways for you to increase your practice revenue. With satellite locations,  your market reach is multiplied without the heavy investment of opening a second office, time, and the slow climb of establishing your practice in a new market.

Surgical Direct partners with you in making satellite locations an easy solution for growth. We do all the legwork by connecting you to our OD referral network to get those cataract referrals rolling in.

Plus, we work with the satellite facility so that you can walk in the door, operate with the equipment and supplies you are comfortable with, and walk out. We take care of all the operational details for you.

2) New Technology (with provided backups)

Newer Phaco and Microscope platforms provide extra measures of efficiency and safety for every patient. Harder cataracts are removed easier, in less time, with better post-op results (generally speaking, but there’s also science behind that statement).

Surgical Direct gives you the opportunity to upgrade your Phaco and Microscope platforms when you want to without spending the capital, which gives you the opportunity to increase your efficiency right now, instead of waiting for funds to become available.

We also provide backup machines for every surgery day, so equipment delays are a non-issue and the day can continue to flow. No more equipment issue delays.

3) Surgery Add-On Options Made Easy

Cases that would be categorized as “Complicated” for reimbursement, generally require different inventory and support than your average case. When it comes to planned surgical Add-on options that can increase your reimbursement rates, Surgical Direct has you covered! Your office requests it, we provide it. This includes Hydrus Microstent systems, iStent inject systems, Omni Glaucoma Systems, and more.

When it comes to the unexpected case scenarios, Surgical Direct Coordinators come prepared for all un-expected case scenarios as well, stocking ample backup supplies like Iris Rings/Hooks, CTRs, Vits, and extra Viscoelastics for the day.

In short, Surgical Direct is here for you, determined to be your partner in all your cataract surgery needs and help you take your practice to the next level.
